One of my co-workers, Denise, has been lending me books recently, (some of her friends from Virginia swap yard sale finds,) and The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society was the first. I fell in love immediately! Juliet is such a likable character, with the air of a classic (like Jane Austen heroines, or Jo March,) it was impossible for me to not want to befriend her in reality. The novel, written in letters, tells the story of the island of Guernsey during the German occupation. The tales are overflowing with friendship, romance, hardship, and love. Written in such a relatable way, it felt as though I was reading stories about my own family’s history. Only the best books can pull on our heart strings, and have us laughing aloud; this one did both. I’ll be recommending it for years.
