Like I mentioned a few posts back, I was completely enraptured by the world of The Hunger Games, so like many others I scanned the lists created in the blogosphere of “what to read next.” I came across Ally Condie’s Matched many times on these lists, so I finally decided to give it a try.
Condie says it best herself, in an interview on Amazon: “This is really the story of one girl, Cassia, learning to choose.”
Cassia lives in a world controlled by The Society. The Society chooses who you will love, where you will work, where you will live, how many children you will have…all of the details of your life. In your late teens, the Society presents you with ‘your Match’ – the person they’ve selected for you to spend your life with. Though after Cassia’s Match Banquet, she realizes the Society has made a mistake, when someone else, someone else she knows, face flashing on the screen as she goes to read the micro card with the information about her Match. This event sets in motion Cassia’s distrust and doubt of the Society. Up until then she never really thought to question the lives that were handed to them, but now she has the taste of choices lingering, and so the story goes…will Cassia leap to make her own decisions in this controlled environment, or accept what’s she’s been given?
As I mentioned before, nothing I’ve read to date has really topped THGs (have I convinced you yet?) but this was a pretty fast paced interesting read, that really emphasizes being true to ones self, and owning our choices.
