You don’t even have to pretend to be surprised that Love Actually is one of my favorite movies of all time, and if you asked me to watch it any day of the year I would say: “let’s do it!” First of all the cast is phenomenal. Second of all, so many story lines intertwining in surprising ways which is one of my favorite things to see unfold on screen. Third – the music is fantastic. Four – it has probably created some unrealistic expectations in love for me. (If I ever get married it doesn’t have to be some huge shebang. BUT the musical sequence in the wedding in the beginning of the film? My heart sprouts wings and flutters as soon as it starts. Also, hello the cue-card scene? I’m slowly disintegrating into a puddle of mush just typing this.) Even the parts that make me cry are still beautiful. I want to be Juliet. I want to dance around in socks with the Prime Minister. I want to give Sam a hug, I want to chase all those typewritten sheets blowing into the wind, sing with Billy and Joe, drink wine with Karen while we listen to Joni Mitchell, and buy Collin a beer.
If you know me, (or even just through reading my posts,) you’ve probably figured out that I’m not a very decisive person. I have a really hard time narrowing any kind of option down – from ice-cream, to have favorite songs. BUT I can honestly tell you that Love Actually has one of the BEST movie intros of all time.
“Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion’s starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don’t see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often, it’s not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it’s always there – fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know, none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge – they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I’ve got a sneaking suspicion… love actually is all around.”
If you’ve already seen this film, then revisit these favorite scenes with me. If you haven’t, then I HIGHLY, HIGHLY (enough to repeat myself) recommend that you go find it – now. Rent it, buy it, stream it, borrow it from a friend – whatever, just go watch it. Love Actually came out in 2003, and as I write this post I can recall viewing it with so many different people. With my family curled up in a blanket on the couch, with Lizzi in the bunks at Phi Mu, with my roommate Alex the first Christmas I lived with her, so, so many viewings because it’s just impossible for me to get tired of. (Kind of like Home Alone.)
Don’t click play if you haven’t seen it because I want these to be a surprise, okay?
Because it’s Christmas, and at Christmas you tell the truth…
And one of my favorite renditions of this song, EVER.
Basically I could share segments of the whole entire film right here, and it might not be enough. Just go watch it. I know I can’t wait to watch it this weekend, myself.
